Education Ministry targets mental health for Child Month 2026

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MOESYI) has launched Child Month 2026 with a strong focus on children’s mental health and overall development.Under the theme “Prioritise Our Children’s Mental Health: Strong Minds, Safer Future,” the ministry is driving initiatives to build resilience, strengthen self-awareness and promote safe, supportive environments for children across Jamaica.The observance began Friday at the ministry’s headquarters with a Prayer and Praise: Child Month Blast-off, bringing together stakeholders and students in a unified commitment to children’s well-being, said a statement from the ministry.Throughout May, the ministry and its agencies will roll out interactive activities, recognition programmes and community outreach to engage children, parents, educators and partners.

The initiatives will celebrate children’s achievements, promote their rights and support their mental, emotional and social development.Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, called for national action:“Jamaica’s future depends on how we invest in our children today. This year, we are prioritising mental health because strong minds build safer communities. I urge all Jamaicans to help create environments where children feel supported and empowered,” said Dixon.The ministry is also advancing inclusion and strengthening partnerships with health, education and community organisations to expand focus on child protection and wellness. Permanent Secretary, Dr Kasan Troupe, reaffirmed the Ministry’s approach:“We are committed to holistic child development - supporting both achievement and well-being - so every child can grow, succeed and reach their full potential,” said Troupe.The ministry is urging schools, families and communities to participate actively in Child Month, noting that collective action is key to nurturing resilient, confident and capable children.
