A child who, who was injured in a daycare centre in Vantaa last month, succumbed to the injuries, Police and the City of Vantaa said in separate press releases on Friday. The child sustained wounds at Kelokuusen daycare centre on March 24 after being crushed between a folding bed and a wall when some of the children were waking up from naptime at the daycare.

Police said that a staff of the daycare centre noticed the two-year-old child in the bed, but the staff´s attention was distracted by another child momentarily. The staff then inadvertently lifted the bed up as a result the child slipped into a gap between the bed and the wall and became trapped. Rescue services people rushed to the spot and recovered the child and took to hospital where the child succumbed to the wounds on Friday. Police are investigating into incident as suspected negligent homicide. The police, however, did not disclose detail identities about the victim and the daycare staff. The incident is a great human tragedy and everyone involved is deeply shocked by the situation, said Detective Inspector and head of the investigation, Marko Särkkä in the press release. Meanwhile, the City of Vantaa expressed profound shock at the death and extended empathy to the family, relatives of the deceased. The flags will be hoisted at half-mast at the City Hall and the daycare on April 7 to mourn the death.
