Mr Trump and senior members of his administration were swiftly evacuated from the scene by Secret Service agents. King Charles's visit will mark the 250th anniversary of American independence and herald the start of celebrations across the US.The monarch will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that brought down New York’s Twin Towers.The shooting suspect, 31-year-old teacher Cole Tomas Allen, was armed with guns and knives when he stormed the lobby of the Washington Hilton.Video footage showed the suspect running through a metal scanner outside the ballroom. Secret Service agents raced to protect Mr Trump, taking the US President backstage. One officer was shot but the bullet was prevented from doing major damage by a bulletproof vest.The gunman, who was tackled to the ground, was not injured.Allen has been taken into custody but is not cooperating with authorities. Last night's incident in Washington is the third attempted assassination against Mr Trump since 2024.The US President, who was at the time campaigning ahead of the 2024 US Presidential Election, was hit by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania.Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, killed attendee Corey Comperatore, 50, a former volunteer fire chief who was in the crowd and shielding his family.
