Black Flag Won't Be The Only Assassin's Creed Remake, Leaker Claims

Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming has a lengthy track record of reliable leaks. When a claim of his fails to come to pass, it's infrequent enough that most of us tend to figure there was an unexpected internal shift—put plainly, then, most things he says do pan out, and that unpredictable element of developer mind-changing is the one thing even Henderson can't work around in his reporting.

Black Flag Won't Be The Only Assassin's Creed Remake, Leaker Claims

The latest big eye-opener from Insider Gaming's podcast teases that Assassin's Creed: Black Flag won't be the only classic game in Ubisoft's long-running franchise to get the "Resynced" treatment.Speaking on Saturday's podcast episode, Henderson and his team discussed the possibility of DLC for Black Flag Resynced. Or rather, the lack thereof. Henderson has it on good authority that no DLC is in the works, with the obvious caveat that, if the remake sells like gangbusters well beyond expectations, then maybe they'll assemble a group of devs to do something a couple of years down the line. But this discourse led to something bigger from the leaker."There is another Assassin's Creed remake in the works—one of the earlier ones. And based on Black Flag, they'll revisit the series, and see what other remakes they can do." "Based on Black Flag" ties in with that earlier correlation; Ubisoft needs to make sure all that poured-in cost for Resynced makes itself back and then some. (For my money, odds are solid that it will.) Having something in the preliminary stages of development and seeing it through to launch are two very different things—Henderson cites the six-to-seven-years of development hell on the Splinter Cell remake, to say nothing of The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time's historic fumble cancelation—but it still shows more than basic interest from the global publishing giant in revisiting Assassin's Creed's past. Now, which one, among the "earlier ones," might Ubisoft be tackling? I'm already seeing people declaring without a hint of irony that it's obviously such-and-such, whether that means Altair's franchise-launching adventure or Ezio's franchise-defining sequel. I'd say that it's unlikely to be either of Ezio's follow-ups, Brotherhood or Revelations, as that'd be a touch strange; it could even be Assassin's Creed 3, or Unity. Do I reckon it's likelier to be AC1 or AC2? Yeah, sure. I do. But wouldn't you like to see a version of AC3, or AC5 (Unity), that isn't compromised by their lesser elements? Paris deserved better.
