89-year-old man arrested after shooting incidents in Athens

Greek national broadcaster ERT reported that five people were injured in two shooting incidents in Athens on Tuesday. The first occurred in the Petralona area of southwestern Athens, where the suspect entered a social security building and opened fire, injuring one employee. The second took place later near the Magistrates' Court in central Athens, where he opened fire and injured four people. All injuries were minor, and the suspect fled after abandoning the shotgun at the scene. Following the incidents, Greek authorities launched a large-scale manhunt and identified the suspect as an 89-year-old man with a history of psychiatric treatment and familiarity in the areas where he operated. Investigators said the suspect appeared to have planned his escape in advance, having arranged a taxi two days earlier from his niece's residence in the Kato Patisia district of Athens to central Athens. Earlier, the suspect's niece contacted police after recognizing him, saying he had previously threatened violence over grievances related to his pension and had expressed anger over delays in its payment. Her statement, along with information provided by the taxi driver who transported him, helped authorities track him down. Police said the investigation of the shooting incidents is still ongoing.
