Nearly 8,000 migrants were reported dead or missing on migration routes worldwide in 2025, bringing the cumulative total since 2014 to more than 82,000, according to data released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Tuesday, reported Xinhua. Analysis by the IOM's Missing Migrants Project estimated that at least 340,000 family members have been directly affected by migrant deaths recorded by the organization since 2014.
The IOM's 2025 Global Overview of Migration Routes also said that migration routes worldwide are shifting, but overall migration pressure has not eased. The report noted that conflicts, climate shocks, shifting labour demands and policy changes are altering how and where people move. While arrivals along some established routes have declined, the report said that journeys have often become longer, more fragmented and increasingly dangerous.
