26 killed in traffic crashes in April – ITA

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) continues to report double digit reductions in road fatalities five months into the year.According to the latest statistics released by the ITA on Friday, 26 people were killed in 22 fatal crashes during the month of April. This shows a 16 per cent reduction in fatalities and a 15 per cent decline in fatal crashes when compared to April 2025.During the month, pedestrian fatalities were down 27 per cent; however, private motor vehicle driver fatalities were up 133 per cent or four fatalities when compared to April 2025.Significantly, motorcyclists accounted for 12 per cent or three fatalities during April 2026.
When compared to April 2025, fatalities involving motorcyclists have decreased by four or 57 per cent.The ITA said five elderly road users and one child were killed in motor vehicle collisions during April. It said vulnerable road users - pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion riders combined - accounted for 50 per cent of fatalities during April 2026.Meanwhile, with five road deaths, the parish of St Ann had the most fatalities during the month under review. Manchester and Westmoreland were next with three each, while Hanover, St Mary, St Catherine, St Andrew, Kingston and St Thomas each recorded two fatalities.One road user was killed in St James and none in Trelawny and St Elizabeth.Overall, the ITA is reporting that 93 people have been killed in 82 fatal traffic crashes since the start of the year. Fatalities are down 31 per cent while fatal crashes have declined 32 per cent.-Lynford Simpson
