A total of 191 dead seals have been found along the Caspian Sea coast in western Kazakhstan's Mangystau region, local media reported Friday, reported Xinhua. The carcasses were washed ashore by northwestern winds over the past two to three days, head of the regional fisheries inspection department Konarbay Bazarbayev said. Specialists have collected water and soil samples at the site, while experts from the Kazakh Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology have taken samples of the animals' teeth, claws and internal organs to determine the cause of death, Bazarbayev added.

According to the institute, the seals are believed to have died more than a month ago. Based on long-term research, scientists say the likely causes include weakened immunity and reduced overall resistance, making the animals more susceptible to infectious diseases. In 2025, a total of 2,212 dead seals were found along Kazakhstan's Caspian coast.
